Hi Everyone!

Summer is upon us. It's a great time for family, food and fun at the lakes. It's also a great time to catch up on the relaxing beading projects that you haven't had time for in the hectic daily lives we lead. Picture a screened in front porch a glass of lemonade warm sunshine, cool breezes and a bead tray with your favorite projects! That's the life! Looking for new projects? You're in the right spot. Pour a glass of the lemonade right now, and sit and relax and peruse the summer schedule of classes and events.

Kicking of July is a very special event. Beads on the Kennebec is happy to welcome Melody MacDuffee, nationally known designer and author of four books on jewelry making. Melody teaches at the Bead Shows and bead stores nationwide. She is also co-founder and director of a small fair trade non-profit called "Soul of Somanya". The organization offers paid training in jewelry-making skills and then ongoing, steady employment at a living wage, to at-risk young adults in the Krobo region of Ghana, where wonderful, hand-painted recycled-glass beads are a traditional art form. The jobs, paying well over Ghana's mimimum wage, keep these young people from ending up in the streets and they are better able to support their families and still save money to invest in education. Soul of Somanya also buys beads at from the various bead-makers of the region for resale here and around the world. This allows them to skip the middleman and thereby help to raise their standard of living as well. These beads and ready-made jewelry will be part of a SPECIAL TRUNK SHOW here at the shop starting Friday, July 8th and running through Sunday, July 10th (yes, the shop will be open on that Sunday). There will be six classes in jewelry making and components with wire over the course of the three days. See individual class projects below. I'm very excited!! Looking forward to seeing you at this wonderful event!

The usual group of instructors will also be on hand with some very special classes of their own. The list is below, so please peruse to your heart's content.

Call the shop with any questions and to register.

Register for classes by July 1st and receive 15% off materials for the registered classes!!

See you ALL soon and,

Happy Beading!

Linda

YOU ASKED FOR IT! I have been in love with these hand woven herringbone stitch bracelets since I began beading. Many people seeing them here in the shop have asked about classes. I finally tracked down Kathleen Kimball-Baker, the designer of these soft supple ribbons of beads, and she graciously gave me her permission to teach them. First seen in the Oct/Nov 2004 Beadwork magazine they were so popular, everyone I knew who beaded, knew about them. They are a perfect summer (or anytime) casual bracelet to wear with light, colorful clothes and jeans. Don't wait any longer, reserve your seat today

I like to gift these as package toppers and they are perfect to slip into a card to send across the miles. Start now and you'll have enough for all your family and friends. (But keep a few for yourself).

BORDER WRAP: SATURDAY, JULY 23, 10:30, W/MIG LEMIRE, BEGINNER, FEE: $55

The second in the WIREWORKS series, this class teaches you how to showcase a cabochon or other flat backed stone by incasing the edges in a neatly bound wire wrap. You'll learn to create exquisite sterling, silver filled or gold filled border wrapped slides and pendants. (They look great in copper, too.) Bring your own stones or pick from our beautiful selections. (This is a standalone class. You do not need to have taken Wire Sculpting to accomplish this technique. This technique will spring board you into many other wire wrapped pieces).

YOU ASKED FOR IT! Back by special request, this ornament is so beautiful it will take your breath away. This is an heirloom piece that will be handed down for generations, gaining value (sentimental and monetary) with each passing year. In the first class, we'll begin making the netted cover. The second class we'll secure it over the glass ball and systematically add the crystal drops. Done in Czech fire polished crystals, this piece is not as complicated as it looks. It is basic netting with embellishments and ideal for a beader who is new to hand weaving. They are fun to do as well. Start now and you will have loads of time to enough to cover your tree or complete your gift list. Making one of these magnificent orbs always gives me an Olde Fashioned Holiday feeling. This class was so popular in March I've been asked by a number of you to do it again! This piece, which looks so complicated, is really a fun, easy project which uses small amounts of many kinds of beads. This means it's a great stash buster. You can use up those extra little piles of beads from other projects. It is a most relaxing technique, too. Picture it! BASIC EVENCOUNT PEYOTE STITCH BRACELET/BOOKMARK: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 6:00, W/ LINDA, BEGINNER, FEE: $22.50

If you only learn one Hand Weaving stitch, Peyote stitch is the one to learn. A popular form of hand weaving that produces a brick work pattern, it is used to create bracelets, necklaces, encase cabochons, and in the more advanced forms, beaded boxes and sculptures. Thumbing through beading magazines and books you will generally see one or more projects that incorporate peyote stitch. In this class we will create a Flat Even Count Peyote band which may be finished as either a bracelet or bookmark. These will work up easily, once you know how, and make great gifts. This class is a pre-requisite for Free-Form and other more advanced peyote stitches.

JAPANESE BRAIDING (KUMIHIMO), SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, NOON, W/SUE DAIGLE, FEE: $25, SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

Japanese Braiding or "Kumihimo" is an ancient art form that dates back to around 8000 BC, yet fits into our contemporary society quite well. Meaning a "Gathering of Threads", Kumihimo braids were used as personal adornment such as obi-jime ties, ropes to bind ancient scrolls, and were presented by emperors to heroes and others who earned high honors. Today they lend themselves well to belts, trims, handbag straps and, of course, jewelry. This relaxing form of beaded braiding works up quite quickly and makes beautiful, affordable and very unique gifts. This class always fill quickly so reserve your seat early. Ask for a materials list as a small amount of prep work is necessary prior to the class.

GARDEN NECKLACE: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24., W/LINDA, FEE: $22.50, SKILL LEVEL: NOVICE (Some hand weaving experience recommended)

Just in time for SUMMER GARDENS! Pretty as a picture, just seeing this gorgeous choker makes you think of sunshine and flowers. This fabulous piece by Deborah Roberti is as fun to make as it is to wear. Pearls and crystals in a triangular weave extend from a right-angle weave chain. This one fits closer to the throat but you can make it any length you desire. A stunning piece for weddings, or just because it makes you feel good! Your choice of colors will make it uniquely yours. I've donated this piece to several auction fundraisers and it is always a hot item. I'm sure it will be in your circle of friends, too.

LOOM WOVEN WINDOWS BRACELET: SATURDAY AUGUST 27, 10:30, W/ JOHANNA BIERWIRTH, SKILL LEVEL: NOVICE, FEE: $45

The gals in the last loom pendant class with Johanna got so excited about this pretty and interesting loomed bracelet that we just had to book it. With basic loom experience you'll be able to create this beautiful open work loom bracelet inserting crystals or beads of choice in the "windows" created. It's always fun to learn something new!

BEADING BASICS: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 6:00, W/ MARIE JACQUES, BEGINNER: FEE: $25

This class is a must for the beginning bead enthusiast or for anyone interested in brushing up their beading skills. Learn how to use the tools and materials available to create and finish your own wearable art. Some attention will also be given to color, shape and balance. These techniques will spring you forth into the world of beading with the confidence it takes to create your own designs! Focus will be on single strand necklace or bracelet and basic drop earrings as time allows.
