Hi Everyone!

Happy New Year Everyone! Here's to a good one! Lower gas and oil prices to start the year off will, hopefully, give us some relief to pursue the little pleasures we may have had to put on a back burner for a while. Things like the joy of beading and jewelry making. Beading is such a relaxing hobby. It's also stress reducing and stimulates your creativity, releasing endorphins and makes you HAPPIER! Who doesn't want to be happier? It's been proven that those who engage in a creative , non-work related pastime during the long winter months can reduce the depression that comes with Seasonal Affect Disorder. So, do something CREATIVE for the next few months. You'll feel better and have some beautiful bling to show off in the spring! To make it easier to enjoy your passion, many of the classes this quarter remain at the reduced rate that was begun in the last quarter.
As always, the new Class Schedule has a mix of wonderful new projects and old standards you may not have gotten around to yet. There are plenty of BEGINNER Classes to get you started on techniques or easily transition into a type of beading you've never tried before. Mig Lemire, wire artist extraordinaire, is back, of course, to help you become the wire artist you've always wanted to be. It's much easier than you imagine, especially with expert help! Check out her classes below. Most are beginner level. Odin, has several new pieces that will get you started on your hand weaving journey and a new one for the more advanced beader looking for a challenge. Sue Daigle will be offering the basic Japanese Braiding class and another Kumihimo bracelet using the magatama beads. So striking! Marie Jacques will be helping new beaders (or those who want to refresh their basic skills) with Beading Basics and will "warm" you up to fiber jewelry with an easy yarn and bead crochet bracelet. Very Easy! She'll also be reprising FREE-FORM PEYOTE!! This is such a fun and "freeing" type of beading where the sky is the limit. It's such fun to begin with a base of beads and then just see where it leads. So register early and let you INNER BEADER FREE!! I'll be offering a basic ODD COUNT PEYOTE class to get you into practice for it. This class will be great for new beaders just learning peyote stitch and those who are proficient in even-count peyote, but need a little help getting the turn-around in odd count. This class will also put you in a good position for any of the other classes incorporating Peyote Stitch that will be offered over the next several months.
We will also have the privilege of welcoming a new instructor and author to the shop in January! Ashley Bunting is a Maine gal who's first jewelry making book has just been published with Kalmbach Publishing. The book will be on the shelves in January and Ashley will be holding a class of one of the projects in the book on January 24th. What a great experience to learn a technique from the creator!! What a fun day it will be. Do register early, as seating is limited and you won't want to miss out.
Here's a little background on Ashley and the new Book. Instructor: Ashley Bunting, Author of "Fiber & Cord Jewelry" Bio: In elementary school she was all about making polymer clay beads. In middle school she took her first silversmithing class. At the age of 16 Ashley was hired at the local bead shop, where she would work for another 11 years, climbing the ranks to head designer and product developer. At 18 she was off to The University of the Arts to earn a BFA in sculpture. After college she returned to Maine and delved deeper in to the jewelry world, teaching, starting her own line, designing tutorials, and being published in top beading magazines. A few years later she was discovered by Xuron Corp. and became their jewelry brand ambassador, spreading the love of Maine made jewelry tools. And now? She just wrote her first book, Fiber & Cord Jewelry! "Fiber & Cord Jewelry" offers a whole new twist on paracord and more! With just a few alterations - a snip, a turn, a twist - Ashley Bunting transforms common stringing materials into bright, beautiful jewelry. Add a few everyday components like gemstones, findings, and chain, and colorful paracord becomes a bouquet of flowers. Natural fibers become the focal point of a sea-inspired bracelet. Leather becomes a pair of fun, fashionable earrings. Easy-to-follow instructions make getting started a snap - and even beginners can create modern, upscale jewelry in an afternoon or a weekend!
Well as you can see, an exciting time is "in store". There are many new friends you just haven't me yet here at the shop. So come on in and join the fun! Looking forward to seeing you soon and,
HAPPY BEADING!!
And thank you for the privilege of serving you this past year. It's been a pleasure!!
Linda

It look very involved, but is really a cinch to create with little experience to no experience. Ever held a needle and thread? Then, you're good to go. Start with a bracelet and later you'll be turning out necklaces to match. Beautiful! This class is a prerequisite to the NETTED/HERRINGBONE TRANSITIONS BRACELET for next month. If you'd like to learn that bracelet, then you will need to know Netted Rope. This class fills fast so register early.

JAPANESE BRAIDING (KUMIHIMO), SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, NOON - 2:30, W/ SUE DAIGLE, FEE: $25, SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

Japanese Braiding or "Kumihimo" is an ancient art form that dates back to around 8000 BC, yet fits into our contemporary society quite well. Meaning a "Gathering of Threads", Kumihimo braids were used as personal adornment such as obi-jime ties, ropes to bind ancient scrolls, and were presented by emperors to heroes and others who earned high honors. Today they lend themselves well to belts, trims, handbag straps and, of course, jewelry. This relaxing form of beaded braiding works up quite quickly and makes beautiful, affordable and very unique gifts. This class always fill quickly so reserve your seat early. Ask for a materials list as a small amount of prep work is necessary prior to the class.

ODD COUNT PEYOTE STITCH: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21, 6-8 P.M. W/LINDA, FEE: $20, SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

Have you mastered Even Count Peyote Stitch and are a bit intimidated by Odd Count? Or just new to Peyote Stitch altogether? This class is just for you. We've spent a lot of time in past classes learning Even Count Peyote Stitch, which is the most commonly used form. There are times, however when an odd count is needed or recommended to achieve a certain result. Although Odd Count Peyote is not difficult, there is an odd little turn around to get your stitching going in the right direction. This turn can sometimes seem a bit intimidating to a new beader (and even the more experienced). Having someone to show you the way of it can be a big help. This class will set you up of any of the other peyote stitch classes offered here this quarter. Register early!

You'll learn to create exquisite sterling, silver filled or gold filled border wrapped slides and pendants. (They look great in copper, too.) Bring your own stones or pick from our beautiful selections. (This is a standalone class. You do not need to have taken Wire Sculpting to accomplish this technique. TRADITIONAL PEARL KNOTTING: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 6-8 P.M., W/ LINDA, FEE: $20, SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

The ability to knot neatly between beads is a great tool to have in your beading repertoire. Pearls are usually knotted on silk cord. As with any natural fiber, it only last so long. If fact, it is recommended that you have your natural pearl jewelry re-strung and knotted every few years. Traditional pearl knotting can be quite expensive with re-strings costing as much as $2.00 per bead and in some cases, more. Knotting can also be used for other beaded necklaces and bracelets, too. Have fun with colored cords and beads making fun and funky looks to match your materials and moods. Come for a relaxing evening with silk cords and beads. Call today!

In fact, at least one netted portion will need to be completed prior to class. This is a great opportunity to take your beading skills to a new level. Call me FMI.

This is another class offered last quarter during the holiday rush that received a lot of attention. We're offering it again by popular demand for you to enjoy at your leisure. I love the wider cuff bracelets. They fit closer to my wrist and are so comfortable to wear. This one gives you an easy intro into using the new Super Duo Beads. This class was such a hit last quarter, we've been asked to have it again. Folks who have taken it previously have been having such fun exploring the endless possibilities for combining seed and novelty beads into unique art jewelry! You've marveled at the seemingly random beauty of Freeform Peyote stitch. How do they do it? Stitching seems to branch off every which way with different size beads interjected everywhere? What may seem random usually does have a plan (of sorts). Marie will show you how to jumpstart your creativity. You'll start with a thin band and build from there. Where will your imagination take you? These are just a sampling of where your imagination may go. Bring all your odd beads and see how to bring them all together beautifully!

LEATHER WRAP BRACELET: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, NOON - 2:30, W/ SUE DAIGLE, FEE: $35 (INCLUDED TUTORIAL), SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

Due to the incredible popularity of this fabulous bracelet, we're reprising the class, again!! This bracelet is all the rage! It's the coolest idea to come around in a while and a super causal summer accessory. The technique for this design was created by Denise Galloway and Maria Loughran. They had both been making leather bracelets for a while, when Maria came up with brilliant idea for a button closure that requires no knots. The bracelet stays flat against the wrist. If you have been admiring these bracelets, now you can make them for you and all your friends. Whether you choose natural stone crystal or something else, this bracelet is hot!!! This class fills fast, so don't delay, call today!

This class, offered last quarter, was such a big hit. Several who couldn't make it have requested a repeat. This is a good intro to using Duo beads. And these earrings are gorgeous! And they are so, very easy to make with just a little hand weaving experience. Using Super Duos, seed beads, bicone crystals and Rivolis, these work up super quick! I completed both earring in under an hour! I've worked patterns that rendered similar results that took three times longer or more. And, well, they're stunning! Love Japanese Braiding? This time we're making a fabulous bracelet using magatama beads. I just love the texture. Elegant dragon scales! But the choices are yours.

BEAD CROCHETED ROPE: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 6-8 P.M., W/LINDA, FEE: $20, SKILL LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE BEADER (with knowledge of basic string crochet slip stitch).

I've been asked several times over the past year when I would offer the Bead Crocheted Rope class again. This is an interesting project and does take a little getting used to but, is well worth the time it takes to master. The results are magnificent spiraling, tight beaded ropes that wow everyone who sees them. I've had a lot of practice with this technique and am willing to pass on any tips I've learned to enlighten your journey. It's a good time to refresh your skills if you've taken the class before.
